As the population in Asia continues to rise, so does the amount of thin and single-use plastic. Plastics fragments can release toxic chemicals such as methane and ethylene into the environment that can cause serious health risks for humans and animals.

Gas emissions from the plastic lifecycle account for 3.8 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

To tackle this ever-increasing problem, we deploy our unique depolymerisation technology to break down large polymer chains in plastic into useful energy and material resources. In addition, our management system covers plastic waste that would ordinarily not be ‘recycled’, such as wrappers and thin plastic. Depolymerisation is entirely emission-free. With this innovative technology, Blue Planet is combating the plastic plague by reversing plastic production.

Extracting Minerals from E-Waste

E-Waste constitutes all the waste discarded from electronic devices. The rapid expansion of technology has led to an exponential increase in E-Waste. Currently, E-Waste is the fastest growing waste stream causing serious environmental issues.

We deploy advanced technologies in Hydro-Metallurgy to efficiently recover minerals and metals from discarded electronic devices. Additionally, we use ultrasonic agitation to increase the recovery time of discarded devices, reducing the demand for mining raw materials from the earth. By extracting raw materials from discarded devices and minimising the need for risky raw materials mining, we enable the sustainable production of new electronics and remain true to our founding principle of the triple bottom line.

Converting Organic Waste into Biogas

An increase in organic waste results from an increasing population. Our technological expertise and capability in Anaerobic Digestion ("AD") lie at the core of converting 'local waste into local energy'.

In line with SDG 7 of the United Nations sustainable development goals and the economic principle of the circular economy, we generate clean energy from locally occurring organic waste streams and deliver it via affordable modular systems. Our three distinct technologies allow for customised organic waste management solutions, adapted to service large centralised projects, processing over 200 tonnes of organic waste per day, down to small rural and community projects that process less than 500 Kgs per day. In creating renewable energy from all types of wet and dry organic waste, Blue Planet is helping mitigate the climate change risks associated with toxic methane emissions.

Reclaiming Waste from Exhausted Landfills

Landfill-caused environmental crisis run deep. The uncaptured methane from landfills is a significant contributor to climate change. It is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

To reduce the environmental impact, Blue Planet pioneered integrated landfill mining. Our all-encompassing waste management solution is a sustainable alternative that prevents the contamination of waste into local communities, allows the recovery of valuable materials and converts waste into useful resources. It facilitates upcycling by separating certain materials, isolating specific waste products like inert waste into concrete blocks, converting plastic waste into fuel, and decentralising organic waste into energy solutions. Besides upcycling and recycling freshly generated waste, Blue Planet’s technological capabilities clear vast areas of hazardous waste, aiding governments to convert unsanitary landfills into productive land.

Inert waste falls into two main categories: first, naturally occurring inert wastes such as rocks, gravel, sand and other aggregates, as well as a second category, comprised of man-made inert materials such as glass, concrete products and ceramics such as pottery, terracotta and glass.

This latter category is predominantly a by-product of building construction, demolition or renovation. However, all inert wastes share a common property in that they are unreactive to natural decomposition processes.

Because of the lack of global recycling processes, unfortunately, the majority of inert waste ends up in landfills. It is estimated that waste generation will increase by 70% over the next 30 years, so it is important to divert as much of this waste as possible from landfills into recycled and upcycled products.

We mitigate the negative environmental consequences by upcycling inert wastes into geo-polymer concrete blocks. These concrete blocks are made of glass, sodium silicate, construction and demolition waste. This diverts inert wastes from landfill. The blocks are made up of 87 percent upcycled materials and whilst that is a great start, our goal is to reach 100 percent upcycled materials by 2025.

Industrial Waste to Useable Products

Processing Industrial Waste to Useable Products

As our planet becomes more industrialised, so does the presence of industrial waste on a global scale. This category of waste is produced by industry sectors such as manufacturing, mining, petrochemicals and agriculture.

However, many industrial wastes can be effectively recycled or upcycled, the materials just need to be collected, separated and processed ready for re-sale to other companies that utilise them as a feedstock in a different manufacturing process.

Unfortunately, on a global scale, the recycling and upcycling rates for these materials is low with most either ending up in landfills or unregulated waste dumps.

However, by responsibly reprocessing industrial wastes, Blue Planet can reuse, recycle and upcycle materials such as e-waste, wood, paper, glass, and plastic.

Furthermore, our technologies can also displace energy originating from fossil fuels by capturing methane produced from organic waste. This is critical in reducing the daily flow of organic waste into landfills.
